Zeebrugge is one of the few ports that can easily receive the largest container ships thanks to its deep water and advanced terminal facilities. With a range of deep-sea and short-sea distribution options, and a network of intermodal services to reach markets and distribution facilities in the port area, the site is a logistics hub that meets the requirements of a very diverse customer base. Since the merger of the port of Antwerp and Zeebrugge, the port has entered a new phase of development, investment, and growth.
This is one reason why Ziegler chose this port as the site for its new location.
A grand opening ceremony for the new Ziegler branch at Karveelstraat 16 was held on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, marking the beginning of a new phase of growth for the Ziegler Group in the port of Zeebrugge. The meeting was inaugurated by Mr. Alain Ziegler, President of the Ziegler Group, with an opening speech, followed by a speech by Minou Esquenet, responsible for climate and energy, environmental policy, smart city, and facilities management at the Zeebrugge district office.
The new 9,855-square-meter Ziegler Zeebrugge branch allows for the further development of the Ziegler Group’s core business areas from this location. There is more than 3,500 m² of warehouse space in four buildings that are equipped with 8 gates, providing excellent opportunities for logistics and warehousing services for goods passing through the port.
The branch also provides an excellent base for ro/ro, freight to Ireland, and the UK unaccompanied. On the other side of the Channel, Ziegler UK is at the ready, both in the UK with 10 branches and in Ireland with locations in Dublin & Kilkenny.
The renovated facility meets the high sustainability standards of the Ziegler Group and its program “Ziegler. Now even Greener.” It is equipped with 511 photovoltaic panels on the roof of three of the warehouses, which is enough to produce 90,000 KW per year. The building is also equipped with a rainwater storage tank with a capacity of 10,000 liters. Both the offices and warehouses have sustainable LED lighting. And there are ten car-charging stations.
We would like to thank everyone who attended the grand opening event and we welcome you to contact our specialists in Zeebrugge for your transport needs.

As Ziegler Group begins introducing autonomous delivery vehicles (AVs) to Europe, there is much to understand about how these vehicles work and their potential to create positive changes for emissions, city congestion, and much more.
With several autonomous Transporter vehicles from Udelv set to arrive in late 2022, Ziegler Group is preparing to test them for eventual use in city centres throughout Europe.
As exciting as this sounds, safety must be a top priority. AVs will require rigorous testing and regulatory changes before sharing the road with regular traffic. And the general public needs to be convinced of their safety as well.
We can explore how AVs work to understand them better since they will play an increasingly integral part in our daily lives in the future. What technologies enable them to safely enter traffic and navigate a specific set of coordinates safely?
Let’s find out how the Transporters work!
The Delivery Vehicle of the Future
Although many different AV technologies are being developed worldwide, not all rely on the same methods. Most self-driving vehicle manufacturers aren’t focused on developing vehicles intended to make deliveries, which have different considerations that need to be factored in.
The Transporter was developed by Udelv, who makes self-driving delivery vehicles, and MobileEye, an Intel company. Udelv vehicles already have made more than 20,000 deliveries during testing in the USA, and MobilEye technology is currently used in more than 100 million cars worldwide to make driving safer.
The new Transporter, set to hit the market in 2022, is the result of their combined expertise, testing, and experience with initial prototypes. It’s a level 4 autonomous electric vehicle that can make all sorts of deliveries safely and securely. According to Udelv, the Transporter is the first end-to-end solution to autonomous last- and middle-mile delivery.
“From pharmaceutical pills, to groceries, to a 93-inch muffler,” According to Daniel Laury, CEO and Co-Founder of Udelv. “Eventually, this will lead to lower consumer prices, more efficient deliveries, and decongested roads.”
How It Works
There is a massive difference between the requirements of regular self-driving cars and autonomous delivery vehicles, which need to be able to make deliveries easily and securely and drive autonomously.
Cab-less Driving
The Transporter has no seats, steering wheel or pedals. By removing the cab, the vehicle can maximise space for making deliveries.
The Transporter uses the Mobileye Drive™ to drive without anyone piloting it. The system scans its surroundings and references past driving data while automatically opting for the most efficient routes depending on the conditions.
The Mobileye Drive™ self-driving system is made up of the following components:
● Cameras
● LiDARs
● Radars
● EyeQ® (5th Generation)
● Road Experience Management
The redundant suite of sensors – cameras, LiDAR and Radar – allow the vehicle to understand its environment and respond to real-time traffic and road conditions and is powered by EyeQ® from Mobileye.
The vehicle’s software continually updates the vehicle with the most recent and high-definition map coverage to ensure safe trips.
Safe and Intelligent Deliveries
“The Transporter is designed to automate a multi-step delivery journey,” Says Daniel Laury. “Up to 80 stops per run!”
The uPod is the part of the vehicle that handles cargo and deliveries. It can carry up to 2000lbs of cargo. The interior of the uPod has adjustable interior shelves that easily resize to make room for goods of all shapes and sizes.
Deliveries are made by a unique opening mechanism that only allows access to the appropriate package, preventing other people from claiming your cargo.
The uPod is also linked to a cloud-based intelligence software responsible for loading, unloading, and cargo return.
Recipients will be able to use an app to claim their cargo. Udelv has created both B2B and B2C mobile applications for retailers and consumers to retrieve/load the items.
Control from Miles Away
There will be certain situations that arise that require human help, and when that happens, remote operators are always ready to take over control of the vehicle. Unlike drivers, however, a single operator can monitor multiple vehicles simultaneously.
Continuous Improvement & Efficiency
The vehicle is electric and is offered with battery packs ranging from 90 to 160 kilowatt-hours.
The Transporter is truly an impressive feat of technology, and it gives us a glimpse of what to expect in the years to come. Ziegler Group is excited to test the Transporter on private property in the near future!

CHIEF is closing after nearly 30 years and being replaced by Customs Declaration Service (CDS).
Key dates:
Ahead of the closure, HMRC have decided to implement CDS exports over three stages:
- non inventory (GVMS locations) – Live now
- All inventory ports – September 2023
- All export declarations must be through CDS – 30th November 2023
There are some key points you must to do to ensure your goods continue to move without delay.
Ziegler has begun migrating from CHIEF to CDS.
TAKE ACTION NOW.
1. Duty Deferment Account
Anyone who has their own Duty Deferment Account will need to register a new Direct Debit Instruction (DDI).
CDS uses a separate HMRC bank account to CHIEF and a new CDS DDI will be required.
It can take approx 24 hours before your new DDI is live and therefore any delay in setting up could delay your goods if not done prior to Ziegler migrating across to CDS.
Please note, that you will need to grant Ziegler authority to use your Duty Deferment Account on your financial dashboard. Please ensure you grant Ziegler authority with IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
CHIEF DDI should not be cancelled – this is to settle outstanding CHIEF payments.
Click here to set up DDI for CDS
2. EORI
If you had registered for your GB EORI before 01/02/2019, then you’ll need to subscribe to CDS via their Government Gateway. Please note, if a new GB EORI has been applied for since 01/02/2019 automatic registration to CDS will have occurred.
However, please double check you are registered with CDS prior to the dates as outlined previously, an export or import declaration cannot be made on your behalf if your EORI is not registered to CDS and therefore goods will not clear customs.

3. New cash account
The Flexible Accounting System (FAS) is replaced with new Cash Accounts for CDS declarations. Once registered for CDS you’ll automatically be issued with a cash account.
Please note, you will need to grant Ziegler authority to use your New Cash Account on your Government Gateway with IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
KEY CHANGES
1. You will receive a mixture of entries from us until we are submitting all declarations in CDS. Therefore, you will receive ENOs or MRNs depending on whether we’ve submitted them in CHIEF or CDS.
2. CDS will be paperless, what this means, you will no longer receive a C88 and E2. However, our customs software recognises importers and exporters would still want evidence of an entry being made on their behalf. Therefore, they have created an unofficial C88 and E2 combined document that is not recognised by HMRC.
3. We are no longer able to change the method of payment once the entry has arrived. If a deferment account has insufficient funds, importer will need to top up their account.
4. Entries made using CDS, the customer C79 will be generated within their financial dashboard
5. CDS (IP/OP/TA/EU) – If you have applied, renewed or had existing authorisations you would have been provided with a CDS authorisation number in either a new or replacement authorisation letter from HMRC. If you have been contacted by HMRC and provided with new authorisation numbers and guarantees, including deferment guarantee, please provide us the information using the template.
